Major Gifts Officer

AWF is seeking a highly motivated professional who will be the representative of AWF for the organization’s loyal major donor base. The successful candidate  will identify, cultivate and solicit existing donors and major donor prospects for AWF throughout the United States. This position will be based in Washington DC, United States of America.


  • Acquire and maintain familiarity with all aspects of AWF’s program in Africa including each of the African landscapes by knowing the staff, partners, conservation targets, key issues, activities, and funding needs
  • Represent and market AWF’s programs with confidence, clarity, and knowledge of details of programmatic goals and objectives
  • Work in collaboration with colleagues to engage foundations where appropriate
  • Research and identify individual and institutional prospects to promote the financial growth of AWF over the coming two to three years
  • Prepare other advance and follow-up materials as needed to assist in the cultivation of prospects
  • Support the senior colleagues in their workings with the trustees and other friends of AWF in coordinating public and private events in the U.S. and abroad



  • Bachelor’s Degree , graduate degree preferred
  • Demonstrated interest in conservation and specifically in the people, environment, and wildlife of Africa
  • Experience in successfully fundraising for a university or major regional, national, or international organization with responsibilities for individual, corporate, or foundation solicitations
  • Outstanding oral and written communication and research skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate to people with diverse backgrounds
  • Willingness to work extended hours under pressure when immediate funding opportunities arise
  • Ability to travel, mostly within the US, up to 35% of the time.
  • Flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and a "team" attitude.
  • Experience with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge software (preferred).


Expected start date for the successful candidate will be September 1, 2014
