African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) supports the conservation and sustainable management of priority biodiversity landscapes through the support of Protected Area (PA) authorities and local communities living in the periphery of PAs. AWF is seeking a high-performing and motivated individual to support its project in the Bili-Uele Protected Area Complex (BUPAC). Reporting to the Technical Advisor (TA), the Technical Assistant will be responsible for assisting ICCN in the implementation of the anti-poaching program and maintaining relations with provincial civil and military authorities as well as local communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • In close consultation with the TA and the ICCN Site Manager, provide support for the implementation of performance-based management (PBM) and anti-poaching strategy in BUPAC.
  • Facilitate collaboration with military authorities at the provincial and local levels.
  • Assist with pre-patrol and post-patrol training that reinforces PBM procedures and tactics.
  • Monitor patrol observation records, incidents and responses.
  • Perform logistical planning that will ensure field crews (especially those with extended patrols) adequate food rations, supplies, and equipment to support their stay on the ground.
  • Assist and facilitate the implementation of the eco-guards training program with Maisha Consulting to ensure continuity.
  • Ensure good communication between AWF-ICCN and the military authorities.
  • Discuss program goals with a diversity of stakeholders including PA authorities, local communities, traditional authorities, and provincial authorities.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge in use of GPS and CyberTracker/SMART and related tools.
  • Exposure to PA management, development and implementation of anti-poaching strategies with evidence-based methodologies and reporting.
  • Fluency in French and English and knowledge of local languages is a plus.
  • Capacity to communicate in a transparent and respectful manner, defining program objectives clearly.
  • Availablity to spend extended periods of time working/living in new environments and temporary places, integrating into working relationships between local stakeholders.
  • An understanding of and respect for cultural differences in day-to-day communication and interaction.
  • An open-minded approach to different cultures and social realities working toward common objectives.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Familiarity with conservation issues in West and Central Africa, including threats and conservation strategies.
