Wildlife Images from Kruger
In this week’s blog, I present a slide show of camera trap pictures that were obtained from one camera. The camera ran for just over 45 days between June and July 2010. I hope that this will give you an idea of the rich diversity of animals that get captured on film. The camera was set to capture three images sequentially in the hope of capturing at least one good image of a passing animal. Because of this, I often have to go through hundreds of images, many of which are not included in our presentation. I have thus taken one image per sequence, except in the case of a leopard capture — who has three good images. This is purely for selfish reasons of course.
In a nutshell, this was suggested by “C” who, in my view, is very passionate about conservation. This particular camera was selected because it captured images of almost all the large carnivores that live in the Kruger National Park, except the wild dogs (painted dogs). Click here to watch the slide show.
Thank you for your continued support. The next blog post will feature our CEO Dr. Patrick Bergin, who spent some time with Kaizer and me in the field.

i wish i could see the pictures you have capture; but my computer … . i heard the leopards in S. Africa or the whole Africa are not doing so well . too many killed by hunters , that i mean over 10,000 in one year alone; not to mention poaching and killing by livestock owners.

Hi Sauwah,
Firstly I would like to congratulate your group on the publication of your children book, THE SIMBA STORIES, well done!
Back to your question, I don’t have the figures, but yes it is true that there is leopard hunting in certain parts of South Africa, by hunters, poachers and angry livestock owners. In my study site there have been no reports of leopard killing, but I do not rule out that possibility.
Thank you and keep up the good work,
Nakedi

Hi Guys,
My name is Deidre`. My husband and I love travelling in the Southern parts of Africa and we’ve been doing so for the past 16 years.
We run an IT consultancy firm and things can become quite hectic. We’ve promised ourselves that we would try to maintain a balance between work and play, and so we often connect to the vagabond spirit in us and simply get in the car and go where the open road takes us.
Our highlight of the year is going on the Kruger National Park trails where we are able to get far away from the rat race and everything else (including cell phone reception) and immerse ourselves in the bush and its way of life. A group of six of our closest friends joins us and we spend three days hiking in the Kruger, accompanied by two senior trail rangers.
It’s a great way to re-kindle old friendships and catch up on old times. And silently walking in the bush forces you to do some introspection and get your priorities right. Some of my greatest ideas have come from these hikes!
I’ve started a website about the Kruger Wilderness Trails at http://www.africaskyblue.com where I’ve uploaded some trail videos and photos. My husband Arno has also written some stories about our experiences if you are interested.
We hope you find the stories and videos interesting, please comment if you do (or if you don’t, I guess).
Friendly African Blessings
Deidre` Joubert
