Paul Ntiati
Kilimanjaro Heartland Director
Namanga, Kenya
With the sun rising over Africa’s tallest peak, Paul begins another day presiding over the Kilimanjaro Heartland. There is no shortage of work that must be done in order to ensure that this dynamic ecosystem to thrive. Paul must manage budgetary constraints and deal with political issues; the Kilimanjaro Heartland covers parts of both Kenya and Tanzania. And of course, he must make sure that his staff have the necessary means to go about their daily work.
Paul knows the people he works with. He is a Maasai himself. This has enabled him to successful work with communities to develop solid conservation initiatives. Paul and his team have negotiated the acquisition of the West Kilimanjaro Ranch; and area of 75,000 acres which has been set aside for conservation. They have also transformed eight rural villages in West Kilimanjaro into a Wildlife Management Area encompassing almost 170,000 acres. A network of community scouts aid the Heartland’s elephant research and conservation.
And there are more projects on the way. Though the list of work seems never-ending, Paul knows that this is a good thing. For where there’s work, there’s progress.
