Male Grant's gazelles have developed several ritualized postures to determine dominance. If neither combatant is intimidated, they may confront one another and clash horns, trying to throw the other off-balance.

Dr. Simon Munthali is a Malawian wildlife biologist and ichthyologist (a zoologist who studies fishes). He has had a long career in wildlife management that began with a post in the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, Malawi in 1981. Simon has been involved with the establishment, development, and management of Trans-Frontier Conservation Areas; the formulation of wildlife policy; research in the ecology of terrestrial and marine wildlife; and has studied the socio-economics incentives for natural resource conservation. Before joining the African Wildlife Foundation Simon spent five years working with the World Bank in Mozambique on a project aimed at promoting trans-border ecosystem management.

Simon enjoys being part of the AWF team because it is one of the most progressive conservation organizations operating in Africa. AWF's approach of integrating conservation science and enterprise development may be the only hope for poverty alleviation and providing incentives to the rural poor. Simon’s knowledge and solid leadership are helping both wildlife and people of southern Africa.
