NAIROBI, Kenya, November 2, 2012 -- Top legal minds came together at a judicial discussion surrounding the need to enforce harsher penalties for wildlife-related crimes. Convened by African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the comprehensive discussion focused on the successful prosecution of illegal wildlife trafficking, with the goal of effecting more meaningful deterrents. The event was well attended by individuals from top law firms, as well as representatives from state law offices and the judiciary.
South African Rhino Poaching Increases to Unprecedented Levels

488 Rhino Poached So Far in 2012, Surpassing 2011 Numbers
NAIROBI, Kenya, October 31, 2012 -- As of October 30, 2012, a record number of rhinos have been poached in South Africa this year. According to South Africa government officials, a staggering 488 rhinos have been poached in 2012. In 2011, a total of 448 rhinos were poached. With this most recent report, the number of rhinos killed in 2012 has already surpassed that of 2011.

VIRUNGA HEARTLAND, July 18, 2012 -- Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC's) Virunga National Park shows no sign of stopping as fighting between the Congolese army and rebel group M23 took a turn for the worse on July 6. Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park, is home to approximately 200 of the world's critically endangered mountain gorillas.
