Tourists will be able to fly directly into Uganda’s pristine national parks without needing first to clear immigration at the country’s international airport.

Hosted by National Geographic’s Traveler magazine along with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and WildAid, the “Travel for Earth” event focused on ecotourism, highlighting experiences to see rhinos.

“I am both proud and humbled to be part of Kwita Izina, because if there is a more powerful statement of our spiritual connection to nature than what Rwanda has done with the mountain gorillas, then I am yet to find it," says Veronica Varekova.

The African rhino has suffered high levels of poaching and the auction could provide legal cover for criminal gangs in the illicit rhino horn trade. AWF believes that there are no adequate mechanisms at any level — local, national, regional, or international — to control such trade.
