Heartland Image

Supported by three life-giving rivers and centered on the point where Niger, Burkina Faso, and Benin meet, the Regional Parc W Heartland makes up the largest tract of protected savanna in West Africa and is home to a vast array of wildlife, including the only remaining population of West Africa giraffe and the region’s largest elephant population. Consisting of three national protected parks and several adjacent reserves and buffer zones, the Regional Parc W complex is a rich expanse of savanna woodlands, gallery forests, and flooded plains. Two of the biggest conservation challenges here are human population pressures and desertification—problems AWF plans to address through innovative land use and conservation initiatives.
