Award-winning filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert have completed their latest film, Relentless Enemies: Lions and Buffalo, which tells of the grueling fight for survival of highly specialized lions that prey almost exclusively on buffalo in the Okavango Delta. Relentless Enemies will first air on the National Geographic Channel Sunday, January 29th, at 9pm in the USA.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert's world-famous films are mostly focused on the more charismatic African creatures: lions, hyenas, elephants, rhinos, zebras and leopards, and the worlds they inhabit. They believe in the intrinsic value of nature and feel that "if human-kind can't comprehend the inherent value of lions or elephants or rhinos, then what hope is there for other equally endangered or far lesser known species?"

The couple have lived in Botswana for over 25 years, spending a huge percentage of their lives 'in the field' in Africa, creating unparalleled wildlife documentaries and stunning still photos. Both of them believe in the resilience of our natural world, but they also have deep concerns about the way its resources are being abused.

Artistically and poetically, their films show us the lessons we might learn from our wild brethren. There are sometimes disturbing scenes portraying the eternal battle between lions and hyenas. And then there are others depicting the strong bond between a lioness and her cubs and the camaraderie that exists between lionesses who depend on each other during life-threatening hunts. The films have won many international awards and have been screened in over 50 languages and seen by millions of people. And yet it is not the awards that motivate them, but rather a desire to create meaningful films that influence the way people respond to the natural world.

Relentless Enemies will help raise awareness about the need to conserve lions and other African imperiled species. The Joubert's personal philosophy is closely aligned with AWF's African Heartland strategy and they have been tremendously supportive of AWF's conservation efforts.
