Protecting Gorillas, Empowering Communities
In partnership with communities and the Rwanda Development Board, AWF is helping to restore critical habitat around Volcanoes National Park while ensuring that local people are meaningfully involved in the decisions that shape conservation. Through negotiated land agreements, fair compensation, resettlement support, and livelihood opportunities, communities are contributing to the restoration and protection of habitat for Rwanda’s mountain gorillas while strengthening their own resilience.
Reducing Human-Wildlife Conflict Through Community Action
In Uganda's Kidepo landscape, wildlife often moves beyond protected areas into nearby farms, putting both people and wildlife at risk. We train and equip community wildlife scouts with the skills and tools they need to safely respond to conflict and help communities coexist with wildlife.
