Help Protect the West African Giraffe
Support AWF and ASGN
Once ranging widely from Senegal to Cameroon, the West African giraffe, today, is found in a small area in Niger that is not formally protected. On the brink of extinction in 1996, the West African giraffe has staged a promising rebound; its future survival, however, continues to be far from assured.
The giraffe herds live outside the park in a “transitional zone” of the Parc W/Niger, meaning the zone is not formally protected. The giraffe population shares this land with many villages, and human-giraffe conflict is becoming a pressing issue. Farmers clear land for crop cultivation and as the natural vegetation disappears, giraffes are forced to search for other sources of food, often raiding farmer’s fields and granaries.
The Association pour Sauvegarde des Girafes du Niger (ASGN), an AWF partner and non-profit organization devoted to giraffe conservation, counted the giraffe population over the last few years. Up from previous counts, the population seems to be continuing its hopeful, albeit tenuous, progress. AWF, through its support of ASGN, is working to reduce human-giraffe conflict within crucial ecological buffer zones around the park. Your generous donation will help to ensure that this important work can continue and give the West African giraffe population a chance to stage an even greater rebound.
Your gift now will support AWF’s work throughout the African continent and ensure Africa’s wildlife and wild lands endure forever.
