The World Conservation Congress voted earlier today in Hawaii to pass Motion 007 on the closure of domestic markets for elephant ivory.

The African Wildlife Foundation fully supports the vote earlier today (10 September 2016) on Motion 007 at the World Conservation Congress to support a complete ban on domestic ivory markets worldwide. We strongly urge all governments with a domestic market for ivory to immediately institute the legal enforcements required to close their markets.

Ending the legal trade of ivory remains a key step towards reducing poaching in Africa. We call on all countries—particularly those that are source, transit or destination countries for illegal wildlife products—to end the illegal killing of savannah and forest elephants to put a stop to this horrific trade.
