The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. John Salehe, a former Country Director of AWF Tanzania and a board member of the AWF Tanzania Board.

John was an instrumental figure in advancing AWF’s mission in Tanzania and a highly valued member of the AWF family. Throughout his years of service, he played a critical role in strengthening conservation partnerships, supporting sustainable development initiatives, and helping shape approaches that balanced the needs of people and wildlife. His leadership, insight, and steadfast commitment left an enduring mark on both the organisation and the broader conservation landscape.

John dedicated his life to protecting Tanzania’s natural heritage and championing conservation as a pathway to opportunity and prosperity for local communities. He was respected by colleagues, partners, government institutions, and communities alike for his integrity, wisdom, and collaborative spirit. Many who worked alongside him will remember not only his professional contributions, but also his generosity, humility, and dedication to mentoring others.

As we mourn this profound loss, we celebrate a life of purpose, service, and impact. John’s contributions will continue to be reflected in the landscapes, partnerships, and conservation gains that he helped make possible.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, former colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. We stand with them during this difficult time and honour the lasting legacy he has left behind.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
