USAID/Africa Bureau

Support to the International Gorilla Conservation Program (IGCP) for Regional Mountain Gorilla Conservation in the Virungas, (Rwanda, Uganda, DR Congo)

Support from USAID's Africa Bureau will go to strengthen IGCP's work in the Virunga region of central Africa. IGCP utilizes a regional approach to mountain gorilla conservation, and focuses on strengthening the institutions responsible in each country for on-the-ground protection and management of the mountain gorillas and their habitat. Through this grant, IGCP will focus on transboundary coordination, protection/anti-poaching, habitat conservation, and community participation in conservation initiatives.

USAID Global Conservation Program

Support to the Maasai-Steppe Heartland/Manyara Ranch, Tanzania

This agreement is an extension of our Conservation of Resources in Africa Landscapes (CORAL) project, funded by USAID's Global Conservation Program. Under this project, AWF will perform a series of activities to protect the critical land units that connect and sustain the Tarangire-Manyara landscape. This includes focused attention to key remaining corridors, dispersal areas, wetlands and catchments, using the strategies and approach developed through AWF's African Heartland program. More specifically, AWF will work with the newly formed Tanzania Land Conservation Trust (TLCT) to place a key 44,000-acre land unit, the Manyara Ranch, at the heart of this landscape under conservation management.
