AWF’s Legacy in Amboseli
- 1970s: Supported the Amboseli Elephant Research Project.
- 1990s: Introduced the Neighbors as Partners program, pioneering community-based conservation.
- 2000s: Established the first community conservancies and group ranch-based enterprises, investing in local CBOs for lasting stewardship. Flagship initiatives like the Satao Elerai Eco-Lodge (protecting 4,350 acres in Kimana Conservancy) and the Olgulului Community Campsite remain strong models of community ownership.
- 2010s: Focused on livestock value chains, youth engagement, and strengthening conservancy governance.
- 2011s: Exited the landscape after securing sustainable, locally led conservation systems—reflecting AWF’s catalytic, time-bound approach.
- 2024–2025: Invited by the Kajiado County Governor to co-lead development of the Amboseli Master Plan.
