Communities in the Amboseli Ecosystem

AWF’s Legacy in Amboseli

  • 1970s: Supported the Amboseli Elephant Research Project.
  • 1990s: Introduced the Neighbors as Partners program, pioneering community-based conservation.
  • 2000s: Established the first community conservancies and group ranch-based enterprises, investing in local CBOs for lasting stewardship. Flagship initiatives like the Satao Elerai Eco-Lodge (protecting 4,350 acres in Kimana Conservancy) and the Olgulului Community Campsite remain strong models of community ownership.
  • 2010s: Focused on livestock value chains, youth engagement, and strengthening conservancy governance.
  • 2011s: Exited the landscape after securing sustainable, locally led conservation systems—reflecting AWF’s catalytic, time-bound approach.
  • 2024–2025: Invited by the Kajiado County Governor to co-lead development of the Amboseli Master Plan.

Our Current Work

In June 2024, the President of Kenya issued a directive initiating a formal pathway for Amboseli National Park to be transferred from the Kenya Wildlife Service to the County Government of Kajiado. AWF was invited to partner with the County Government of Kajiado to develop the Amboseli Ecosystem Integrated Master Plan—a comprehensive blueprint that aligns ecological integrity with economic opportunity. This multi-stakeholder initiative seeks to guide land-use planning, attract sustainable investment, and ensure equitable development rooted in African leadership.
