Consultancy Opportunity: IWT Risk Analysis for the Lobito Corridor (DRC)
Location: Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) / Regional
Closing Date: February 23, 2026
Project: Countering Wildlife, Timber and other Natural Resource Trafficking in DRC (INL)
Overview
The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is seeking a qualified consultant or firm to conduct a comprehensive analysis of Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) risks associated with planned infrastructure investments in the Lobito Corridor.
This strategic transboundary initiative, spanning Angola, the DRC, and Zambia, aims to catalyze regional economic growth. However, such developments can unintentionally heighten environmental risks. This consultancy will identify potential trafficking vulnerabilities and propose practical mitigation solutions to ensure infrastructure development does not come at the cost of the region's biodiversity.
Objectives
The selected consultant will be responsible for:
- Trend Analysis: Highlighting current trends in the illegal trafficking of wildlife, timber, and natural resources along the Lobito route.
- Risk Identification: Assessing how the development of this corridor may increase trafficking opportunities.
- Mitigation Strategy: Proposing actionable solutions and safeguards to protect high-value species such as elephants, pangolins, and rare timber.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience in environmental risk assessment, law enforcement, or illegal trade analysis.
- Deep understanding of the geographical and socio-political context of the DRC and the wider Lobito Corridor.
- Fluency in English (required); proficiency in French or Portuguese is highly desirable.
