AWF Donates Patrol Vehicle to LUMO Conservancy

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has donated a specially customized patrol car to the LUMO Conservancy in the Greater Tsavo Landscape to aid in wildlife protection and community conservation.

The vehicle, acquired through a U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) grant, which is supporting conservancy management and community engagement, will enhance scout patrols thereby enabling them to better protect the wildlife and manage the conservancy effectively.

AWF’s Vice President for Programs East and Southern Africa Kathleen H. Fitzgerald described the donation as timely saying it would complement the work done at LUMO.

“The vehicle will help increase coverage of rangers, enhance anti-poaching efforts and enable better collection of ecological data around the conservancy, which will lead to better management decisions,” she said.

With support from USAID, AWF has improved management of LUMO Conservancy enabling the local community to better coexist with wildlife. Better conservancy management has led to bursaries to the local community increasing from KES 600,000 to KES 1.5 million annually, donations of desks to nearby Kongoni Primary school and dividend paid to the local community from the park doubling to KES 600,000 last year.

LUMO Conservancy is located in Taita Taveta County and serves as an integral wildlife dispersal area between Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park in Kenya.
